Interview w/ Jim Chianese

Host: Jim, How did you get to be known as THE Profit Mentor?
Jim: You know I’ve been coaching people in one form or another for over 20 years now. I can’t honestly tell whether it was as a Martial Arts Instructor teaching millionaires how to defend themselves or as the marketing director for a financial consulting company helping small businesses grow and then protect their assets, but I always loved learning and teaching others to succeed.
I had the opportunity back in the early 90’s to go to a Tony Robbins event; this was before he was on infomercials. I discovered that I wanted to be like Tony, but on a more personal level. I’d never heard of motivational speaking up to that point. But what struck me so hard after that weekend was the fact that everyone was excited for about a day, then their companies slapped them out of their euphoric state and they seemed to lose all that momentum they left with on Sunday evening.
Now at the time I was running a personal training company, a private/small group martial arts company, and was being recruited by the financial consulting company to teach seminars…doesn’t seem related I know, but the owner wanted me their because he sensed something. I listened, confused how a gym-rat and head-breaker like me was going to help people invest.
This company saw me teaching with such passion and watched me explain several complex moves and strategies to my martial arts class and said, “We want you to teach our agents and clients about compound interest, life insurance and the Stock Market.”
Long story short, they knew I had a wealthy client base (referrals) and I wanted to teach in front of a room. I could take the complex and make it “real” for the average person in a shorter amount of time than most. Well the new career along with me telling all of my clients while they did crunches and bench presses, sort of opened my eyes to what’s possible.
Everyone around me encouraged me to look beyond personal training and start to study how to grow businesses not just muscles. Wow, between the new love for motivational speaking and the treasure chest of marketing experts I found, I went crazy.
I listened to 3-4 hours of marketing and sales training everyday while I drove between client’s homes and my schools. I loved the persuasion skills, the communication strategies, and how people got rich by owning their business. Next thing I know I’m casually taking ideas like Joint ventures and Direct response advertising and spouting off ideas to my clients…why not they were sort of a captive audience.
Well, some of those clients would ask me more about something I said after I trained them, and I’d gladly ramble on about all my new found knowledge.
These people were doctors, dentists, high level managers and CEOs, chiropractors (a lot of them), and sales professionals…not to mention the financial consulting company I was now teaching seminars for twice a week. Over a very short period of time these people started increasing their incomes, some even doubled their incomes in 4 months, from my little business coaching time with them.
I did that for 8 years and never considered myself a marketing expert; to me it was just second nature. I just thought I was blessed with my personal companies until a pastor and previous CEO at a business meeting (for the financial company) pointed out some things to me that I never realized.
He told me to consider the fact that I’d appeared on National television, had a regular spot as a guest on a good-sized talk show, been written about in the major newspapers, had about 300% more clients than my next nearest competitor and I was earning more per hour than most Americans…but to me, I just did what came from my training via my car stereo and some seminars I was attending, and what this pastor friend mentored me on once in awhile.
To me I was just a gym-rat that put a suit on and talked about money and marketing every once in awhile.
Until…the most critical few moments of my life…(long pause)
Host: Until what? Did something happen? What was the critical moment that got you to mentor like you do today?
Jim: It was April 10th, 2000 a Monday. By now I was running 5 different companies including a real estate investing company, a stock trading company, personal training, martial arts, and another part time thing. My wife, Kathy, and I had just moved to a beautiful big home 9 days before. My 1 year old daughter loved the big yard and we just found out a month before that Kathy was pregnant!
Life was as perfect as it could be. I was driving to a client’s house across town at 5:30 A.M. as I did every Monday for the last 12 years. I was 14 miles from the house and I was feeling great one minute, next minute I was sick and light headed and…
I woke up to some guy pounding on my car window, I had crashed on the busiest highway in the city and crushed my car doing 55 mph, and I didn’t have a clue what happened. Thank Goodness it was 5:30 and only a few other cars were on the road with me, I didn’t even bump anybody!
I passed out, but why? I spent a week in the hospital because my heart was stopping!
It would just stop and then 7-8 seconds later start up again, but when you flat-line there is no blood being circulated and out you go. I freaked the doctors out all week. I was a professional athlete according to them. Blood pressure perfect, cholesterol very low, all tests were showing I was healthy, except for that pesky heart stopping issue.
Host: So, what happened? Did they operate or just let you go or what?
Jim: They couldn’t figure out what was wrong, gave me some pills and said you are not allowed to drive until your heart stops “pausing”. It was 18 months before I was allowed to drive, and I lost all my businesses because I couldn’t be there. Lucky I had investments because that’s what we lived on for 2 years. Bad news I went into a depression, the good news (sorta) I was now using a computer and the Internet every day.
Through the Internet I discovered I could get paid to teach what I’d pretty much been giving away for free. I know knew I was mortal, and I could lose everything in a heartbeat…or lack of it. Well enough rambling, basically I started being mentored by business and marketing coaches and they taught me what else was out there for me.
Host: Great, well let me ask you, who are you clients now?
Jim: I work with small business owners, entrepreneurs, and professional service providers that want more profits and more clients sooner rather than hoping and wishing for some miracle to happen later. These are people that know they are good at what they do, but have never been mentored or taught how to attract clients, use the Internet to grow their business, or how to design a lifestyle and make work fit their dream lifestyle not have work dictate the life.
Host: Why would I want to work with you versus any other business mentor? In fact, couldn’t I just go online, invest in some home study courses, and go to some seminars and learn what I need to in order double my business like I see some of your clients have done?
Jim: Let me hit those one at a time. First, most coaches today are pushing life coaching and the concept of time management or goal setting. As for me and my team, we are going to teach you marketing and sales, referrals systems, and Internet secrets to measurably skyrocket your income.
My business owners want more clients calling them. They want to quit getting ripped off from Internet con artists and flaky web designers and get the Internet to grow their business like a 24/7 sale team. They want to start having their business work for them so they can start enjoying their family and life. They tired of having their every waking moment draining them with day-to-day distractions.
Will I occasionally touch on Time management and goals, sure, but only if I see my client is in need of that…most of them need marketing help. Plain and simple; In fact after about 2 months with me they really start seeing how all the passive income streams ideas I teach them are really going to be great ways to free up time so they can actually start working less.
I focus on small business owners and professionals only, no mid-sized or large corporations. I like working with the people that can make a decision and capitalize on opportunities without a lousy committee or some other red tape. I work with the person that is passionate about what they do, but wants balance. No annoying workaholics that hide from their families. Not everybody wants to double their Income, but everybody I work with wants to enjoy life more, take vacations, spend time with the kids and be there as they grow up.
I teach measurable strategies not the “soft info” of a life coach or whatever it is coaches do around human resource management…its marketing, marketing, marketing…which is for client attraction, client retention, and client referrals for growth. It goes way beyond just advertising. I go into sales, becoming a celebrity in your industry, improving profits, and generating multiple streams of Income.
Host: You mention you don’t work with mid-sized to large companies, are there any other reasons you might not take on a client? In other words, If I’m a small business owner, would I automatically be accepted into your mentoring?
Jim: Great question and the answer is yes and no..You see I have a Mentoring Program called The Profit Club Gold and is only $97/month. This is an email and Tele-Training coaching system and is always done in a group format. Now interesting enough, I have some clients that are considered Large corporations in at the Gold membership Level of The Profit Club.
Recently I introduced the Platinum Profit Club. This is for the client that wants some very focused and intense 1-on1 time to accelerate their profits and client aquisition. I only take on action-takers not people that have to get everything approved in triplicate. For that matter, I also don’t work with whiners or people that just won’t take responsibility for their incomes. I teach a lot of shortcuts to success but that term can be deceptive. I don’t necessarily mean simple or easy, just a shortcut.
My best analogy is you’re on the roof of a 125 story building and you need to get to the 125 story building next to the one you’re on. The next building is 100 feet away, but there is a tightrope tied to both rooftops. You could walk down the steps go across the street and climb the other steps, up 125 stories to get to that building…the long way. Or you could use the tightrope and be there in seconds. It’s shorter, but not always easier…the problem with this analogy is that people hear it and start thinking I teach risky strategies; I do not.
What I didn’t tell you is that the effort to get to the other side requires some faith and commitment…and the rope is actually more like a rope-bridge. But few people ever see others walking across the rope, they follow the crowd and do what everyone else does.
A better more realistic example is people want to build up credibility in their marketplace. They can spend 3, 5, maybe even 15 years selling little by little and getting a good reputation …OR…
They could write a book, get it published and marketed, and be considered an expert in their field in less than 90 days.
Scary for some because many entrepreneurs think they just can’t accomplish that due to lack of time, knowledge, money and/or skill.
I teach them how to get a book and an information product for them to sell, a website, press releases, article marketing, a media kit, and several other goodies all done in less than 90 days and how it is almost all done for them.
Done for them as in the shortcut, but the commitment to cross on the rope/bridge must be there. They can’t stop, be mentally afraid of success, or afraid to be considered an expert just because they didn’t “pay their dues” for 15 years like everyone else tries to make you believe is necessary.
It’s the Old Climb The Corporate Ladder mentality vs. my style of Leap-frogging the competition or Shortcuts to Success.

Honestly, that one is open to any business, large or small, that is smart enough to write a book and use that to skyrocket their business!
Host: So the Profit Club Gold is $97/mo and is 2 group trainings each month and a special report on various subjects to help increase any business owners profits, plus a recording of the calls emailed to the members, in case they miss the live call.
Why 2 calls when everyone else in the coaching industry offers just one call and the recording?
Jim: Simple answer with a little attitude thrown in here. There are similar memberships that offer 1 call/month and that call usually goes something like this. The coach hosts a guest speaker. The guest spend 20 minutes introducing themselves, 20 minutes giving you some generic overview and build up to their specialty, and the last 20 minutes are spent selling you on their new gadget, product, or whatever it is they’re selling…and the coach gets an affiliate or referral commission if the members buy the offer.
To me that’s a bunch of B.S.!!! I hate that! I realize it’s only $97/month or whatever I may be paying some other coach, but I’m not paying to be sold to every month and then be told I get a recording of the sales pitch. Just give me some content and at least act like you’re really more worried about my success than just selling me more.
For me, I’m going against every Internet or Marketing Guru out there and offering a minimum of 2 hours of Pure content, and rarely bring on a guest. If I do they must provide content and I “may” let them offer something after I meet my 2 hour pure content commitment to my clients and members first.
As for the Profit Club Platinum, well they get some serious one-on-one time with me every month and that is strictly limited to 25 people…because I personally train and mastermind with them. That is where I get real picky about who I work with, I do not accept excuses from these people if they don’t complete assignments we agree upon together. This group was formed because some of the aggressive the Gold Level members wanted even more and to have it personalized.
They liked what I delivered for $97, but my one-on-one mentoring was a little out of range for some of them. Normally I charge $3500/half day or $5,000 for a full day speech, seminar or Mastermind Session. So I created Platinum in 2008 to meet the demand of the serious “go getter” that just wasn’t ready for my Regular consulting fees.
Host: What all do you cover in your programs?
Jim: Most of my clients want several things, 1) To attract more clients or customers, 2) To use the Internet to help grow their business, 3) To create referrals easily, 4) To make sales MUCH easier and faster, and 5) To leverage their time so they can have more FREE TIME for family or other non-business related pursuits.
From my personal training days I became addicted to helping others get more results in record time for everything they did. Workouts were 30 minutes while others did 60 minutes, yet my clients became leaner and stronger faster. My martial arts clients trained for 6 months and often beat black belts that trained for 4 years.
Then when I got into marketing, I discovered a multitude of ways to double businesses in a matter of months not years. There isn’t one secret or magic formula, but a series of steps and strategies that when the business owner takes action delivers great results.

I’ve failed way more than I’ve succeeded (Oops, I guess I shouldn’t admit that and just tell you how special I am huh?), but I’ve learned from being in the real world in a diverse set of industries, and as if that wasn’t enough I’ve invested close to $200,000 over the years in my education with mentors, seminars, memberships, and products…and always will.
